In 1964 or later AMC came out with a full-flow filter version of the 195.6 oil pump. It fits either motor (flathead or OHV). However it doesn't fit the early (pre-1964) chassis. The filter adapter (and filter) klunk into the suspension. Too bad!
I got this old pump from Joe Fulton. It's pretty badly rusted, but may be recoverable. No matter, it's been enough to show that with some modification it can be made to fit any early American or Nash chassis. The trick is that the filter adapter bolts onto the side of the pump, facing upwards. Removing the adapter (see photos) reveals two ports, one rus oil into the filter and the other is exit. The holes are 0.44" diameter and run through nearly .75" of casting before they reach the pump gears.
It should be very straightforward to drill and tap these holes for 1/2" NPT, then fit nearly any remote oil filter kit to it. There's plenty of room on that side of the engine fo the filter, the hoses don't have to be more than a foot long. As an added bonus, you get to use a common filter, instead of the now hard-to-find Rambler filter.
I have not done this hack; but it's not rocket science.
