First, launch WPS Excel and open your spreadsheet. Choose the cell in the spreadsheet where you wish to see the outcome.

Enter the COUNTIF function as shown below into the cell that has been selected. Ensure that the range containing the cells to be counted replaces D2 and D6 in this function.=COUNTIF(D2:D6,*)Here, the function is instructed to exclusively count text-containing cells using the * (asterisk) argument.

Additionally, you can count the cells that don't just contain text. Use the COUNTIF function modified as follows to do this. Only the cells that are not text should be counted in this function, according to the argument.A cell that has a mixture of text and numbers won't be tallied.=COUNTIF(D2:D6,*)

Enter the COUNTIF function as shown below into the cell that has been selected. Replace D2 and D6 in the function with the range containing your cells. Additionally, change a to any character or word that your cell must contain in order to be counted. The function below counts all cells that have the letter a in them. This means that in our example, since Mahesh and David both begin with the letter a, they will both be counted.=COUNTIF(D2:D6,*a*)

Remove the * (asterisk) symbol from before and after your character or word, as shown below, to have the function count the cells that contain only your selected character or word.=COUNTIF(D2:D6,a)
