January 9, 2024 1.7K views

It is usually straightforward to add images when working in Google Docs. However, people typically encounter challenges when they want to add descriptions. Adding a caption to an image is a simple thing to do.

The three methods discussed in this guide will show you how to add captions to images in Google Docs.

Part 1: Add Captions to Images by Using a Drawing

If you want to add a caption under an image in Google Docs, you can use the drawing feature to link the image with a text caption easily. Using a drawing to add captions allows you to move them as one object.

This method does not require you to have the image in your document.

Follow these easy steps to add captions to images by using a drawing:

Step 1: Insert the Image.

Place your cursor in the document at the point where you want the image and caption to be inserted. Click the “Insert” tab and select the “Image” option. A list of options will be displayed to insert an image into your document.

Alt: Insert the image.

Step 2: Select Upload from the Computer or Choose Search the Web.

Step 3: Select the image to insert.

Step 4: Right-click on the image and select the “Cut” option.

After the image is inserted, right-click on the image and then select the Cu option. That will allow you to reuse the picture later in the document.

Step 5: Go to the “Insert” tab, click on "Drawing," and select “New.”

Step 6: Right-click on the page and paste the image.

Step 7: Select the text box from the tool.

Step 8: Draw a text box and type in your caption.

Step 9: Click on “Save and Close.”

After the caption is inserted, click “Save and Close.”

When you are done adding a caption to the image, you can quickly move the picture with the caption on it anywhere you want.

I use this method often when I want to add captions to images in Google Docs because it allows me to move images together with the captions on them in Google Docs.

Add Captions to Images by Using a Table

Sometimes, you want to save time as you work in Google Docs. Use this if you already know how to add captions to images in Google Docs but don’t know which method will save more time. Follow these simple steps to use this method:

Step 1: Go to the “Insert” tab on your Google Doc and select “Table.”

Select the table with a “1x2” width, i.e., one column and two rows.

Step 2: Go to the Insert tab, click “Image,” and select “Upload from computer.”

If you already have the image you want to caption on your device, select “Upload from computer.” Select any of the available options to upload your photo from other sources.

Step 3: Select the image and click Open.”

Step 4: Type a caption.

Type your caption in the second row of the table below the image.

Step 5: Remove the Border

You need to remove the table borders after you have typed in the caption. Right-click on the table and select “Table properties.” Set the table border to “0 pt” and click “OK.”

Step 6: Preview the image with its caption.

After removing the border, the image and the caption are now seen as one without any line between them. You can quickly move the image and the caption with it.

I use this method to save time as I work in Google Docs. Just like adding a caption by using a drawing, this method of Google Docs image caption also permits me to move the image and the caption together. It also allows me to edit and format the text properties, such as alignment, color, and size.

Add Captions to Images by Using Inline Text
That is the simplest method. Follow these easy-to-learn steps on adding captions to images in Google Docs using inline text.

Step 1: Insert the image in your Google Docs.

Go to the “Insert” tab, click on “Image,” and select “Upload from computer.”

Step 2: Click on the image.

Some inline options will be displayed after you click on the image.

Step 3: Select the “Inline” option to the left.

Step 4: Type in your caption and preview image

All three methods discussed here, showing how to add a caption to a photo in Google Docs, are very efficient and easy to learn.

However, each method is given preference to another, depending on the nature of the work. For instance, if you are working on a tight schedule in Google Docs, using the “Inline option” to add a caption would be the best choice.

This method saves you time and offers the same results as other methods.

Using a table to add captions to your images is seamless, but the inline option still does the job faster.

One beautiful thing about using the table method to add a caption is that you can easily edit and format text properties how you want them.

Unlike the inline method, which requires you to have your image in your document already before adding a caption, using the drawing method does not.
