How to Use Excel Round Function in WPS Office

August 25, 2023 1.8K views

In Excel, the ROUND function can round a number to a specified number of digits. This ROUND function is divided into two functions i.e., RoundUp and RoundDown.

Sometimes, the users want to round the number after doing certain calculations in the WPS Office. Therefore, they want to know the similar Excel function of the round function in WPS Office. This is what we are going to teach you in this guide. This article will introduce the guide on rounding the number by using the round function in the WPS Office.

Keep reading to find out how to use this function in the WPS Office.

Part 1: What is the Excel Round Function

The Excel ROUND function is a mathematical function that allows users to round a given number to a specified number of decimal places.

Its syntax is quite simple and is mentioned below:

=ROUND(number, num_digits).

In this formula, "number" is the value that needs to be rounded, and "num_digits" represents the number of decimal places to which the number should be rounded. For example, if we have the number 3.4567 and want to round it to two decimal places, we would use the formula =ROUND(3.4567, 2), which would result in 3.46.

The ROUND function follows standard rounding rules, i.e., if the next digit after the specified decimal place is 5 or greater, the number is rounded up; otherwise, it is rounded down.

Also, there is one more thing you will have to understand, and that is, if "num_digits" is positive, the rounding occurs to the right of the decimal point; if negative, the rounding occurs to the left, thereby rounding the number to the nearest 10, 100, or so. Let’s take an example of this scenario, too, =ROUND(34567, -3) would output 35000, as it is rounded to the nearest thousand.

Based on all these features, the ROUND function is a useful tool for handling numerical data in Excel. This approach ensures that numbers are presented with the appropriate level of precision for analysis, reporting, or display purposes for both scientific and non-scientific calculations.

Part 2: How to Use Excel Round Function in WPS?

  1. Adjusting decimal places

As mentioned above, the ROUND function can be used to round values to the nearest decimal, as provided in the instructions. However, in this example, we will use WPS Office to test the ROUND function and see if it works exactly as mentioned above.

Let’s test a couple of examples to show you how it works in the WPS Office.

Example 1: Rounding to 3 Decimal Places

In this example, we will see how to round a number to three decimal places using the WPS Office. We will do this by using the Round function in Excel in WPS Office. Follow the below-mentioned steps to find out.

Step 1: Open WPS Office on your PC and open a blank spreadsheet document.

Step 2: Enter some numerical data in a cell or two to test the Round function. In this example, we will take a simple numerical value containing decimals and will round it off to three decimal places.

Step 3: Now we will write the formula to round off this value to 3 decimal places. Let’s see how this works. We will use the same formula of the Round function as mentioned above.

Step 4: We have taken the value from the cell B2 and passed it to the Round function with the ‘num-digits’ argument as ‘3’. Let’s see what the output is.

As we used the Round function to restrict and round off the value to 3 decimal places, we saw that the function did exactly that and returned the value “110.949”. The last digit being 9 is because the digit before 8 was 5, so the function added one to the last digit and displayed the result.

Let’s see another example of this function.

Example 2: Rounding to 2 Decimal Places

Let’s take the same example of the numerical value with decimals, as mentioned above, and see how it works out when we try to round it off to 2 decimal places using the Round function in Excel in WPS Office.

Step 1: Take the same numerical value in the WPS spreadsheets as mentioned above.

Step 2: We will write the formula of the Round function to round this numerical value to 2 decimal places. To do this, we will have to pass the ‘num_digits’ argument as ‘2’. Write this function in the WPS Office spreadsheets and see how it works.

Step 3: We used the same value in the cell B2 to round it off to 2 decimal values. The function and formula we used to do this can be seen in the above screenshot. After completing the formula, press ‘Enter’ and see what is the output.

The formal yielded ‘110.95’ as a result of the Round function with 2 decimal places. The actual decimal value was 4’ for the second place, but it got incremented because the value on its right side was greater than 5, i.e., 8.

  1. Adjusting the nearest number

Adjusting a numerical value to the nearest number means that we will somehow ignore decimal values in that digit and will round the number off the nearest absolute value. This means if we have a number like 59.7784, and we try to round it off to the nearest 10th value, we will get the result simply as 60, with no decimal places.

Let’s take a couple of examples and see how it actually works with the Round function in Excel in WPS Office.

Example 1: Rounding to the Nearest 10

Step 1: Open WPS Office spreadsheets on your PC and enter a numerical value containing decimal places. In this case, we will take the value ‘154.374876’.

Step 2: Now, we will write the formula for the Round function to round the value to the nearest 10. To do this, we will pass the ‘num_digits’ argument as a negative 1, i.e., ‘-1’, as described at the start of the article.

Step 3: After you have written the formula, press enter and see what it returns. Most probably, the result will be 150 because the last absolute value of the digit was less than 5.

Example 2: Rounding to the Nearest 100

Let’s take another example of the same numerical value where we will round it off to the nearest 100. Let’s see how it goes.

Step 1: Take the same numerical value and just change the formula in it. For example, in the above example, we set the ‘num_digits’ value as ‘-1’, but here, we will set this value as ‘-2’.

Step 2: The ‘num_digit’ value as ‘-2’ will round off our numerical value to the nearest 100. The resultant output will be rounded off to the 100’ value.

The function has rounded off our numerical value and returned the result as 200. Let’s see how and why that happened. Our value i.e., 154.374876, was closer to ‘200’ as compared to the other nearest 100’s value, that is ‘100’. That’s why the function returned the answer as 200 instead of returning 100.
